๐ฆ Inventory & Storage Guide
The bag upgrades from 10 โ 20 โ 30 slots, and the global chest inventory lets crafting pull materials from any unlocked chest โ one of Fields of Mistria's best QoL features.
Backpack Upgrade Ladder
The wiki names the first tier "Basic Pouch" and the second "Bag Upgrade" (some media call both "Bag Upgrade"). Prices and slot counts agree across all sources: 1,000t โ 20 slots, 2,000t โ 30 slots.
| Tier | Name | Source | Price | Slots | Toolbar Tab |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Initial | โ | โ | โ | 10 | A |
| 1st upgrade | Basic Pouch | General Store | 1,000t | 20 | A + B |
| 2nd upgrade | Bag Upgrade | General Store (after completing "Upgrade the General Store") | 2,000t | 30 | A + B + C |
๐ก The first upgrade is purchasable on day one, but you start with only 50t โ earn money first. The second upgrade requires completing the "Upgrade the General Store" quest line before the 2,000t upgrade is stocked.
Storage Chests
Place chests inside the house or anywhere on the farm (by the front door or farm entrance is recommended for quick access).
| Chest | Method | Cost | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Wood Chest | Craft | 30 Wood + Woodcrafting Lv4 | Crafted at the crafting table in town center or by the Carpenter's Shop. Reaching Woodcrafting Lv4 is easy โ repeatedly craft fences. |
| Basic Wood Chest | Buy | ~250t | Purchased from the General Store. |
| Large Chest | New (v0.14.0) | Larger capacity | Added in the third major update (2025-07-21) along with Auto-deposit. |
| Extra-Large Chest | New (v0.14.0) | Largest capacity | Added in the same v0.14.0 storage update. |
Global Crafting Inventory (Key QoL)
Fields of Mistria's core convenience: crafting does NOT require materials to be in your bag โ as long as materials sit in any unlocked chest, crafting pulls them automatically.
- Crafting pulls materials automatically from any unlocked chest โ no need to carry materials in your bag, which saves enormous time.
- Chests can be scattered (inside the house, on the farm, even at the mine entrance) and still share one global inventory.
- Combine with chest Lock to protect key materials from being auto-consumed while crafting.
๐ก This is a notable improvement over older titles like Stardew Valley, where crafting requires materials on your person.
Chest Features
Opening a chest shows several function buttons at the top:
| Button | Effect |
|---|---|
| Sort | Quickly organizes the items inside the chest. |
| Quick Stack / Auto-deposit | One-click bulk-deposits matching items from your bag into the chest (enhanced in v0.14.0). |
| Label | Name your chests so you know the contents without opening each one. |
| Lock | Locked items are NOT pulled by global crafting โ protects key materials and collectibles from being accidentally consumed. |
๐ก Lock is the key technique: put items you never want auto-consumed (gift reserves, pending museum donations, rare materials) in a locked chest to avoid burning them while cooking or crafting.
Practical Tips
- Spend your first 1,000t on the Basic Pouch โ it is the single highest-priority early investment (10 slots fill up instantly, especially in the mines).
- Craft a Basic Wood Chest early (30 Wood + Woodcrafting Lv4) and place it by your front door or farm entrance for quick access.
- Use multiple chests with Labels โ sort by seeds / crops / ores / bugs & fish / gifts / museum donations.
- Keep a locked chest for critical reserves โ prevents global crafting from consuming gifts, museum donations, or rare materials.
- Quick Stack before diving into the mines โ bulk-store unneeded materials to free your bag for loot.
- Buy the second Bag Upgrade (2,000t) as needed โ first prioritize the bridge repair, tool upgrades, and the Mill.
- On v0.14.0+ enable Auto-deposit โ it drastically cuts down on manual sorting.
