🎣 Fishing Guide
Casting costs no stamina — only catching does. Even 1 stamina can cast. Fish are Universal Dislike for most characters (but cooked fish dishes are great gifts).
How to Fish
- Hold the tool key to charge (PC default: long-press left mouse). A square reticle appears and changes color with distance; unreachable tiles show a red X.
- Release to cast into the target water tile.
- A black fish shadow swims toward the bobber and may nibble several times before truly biting.
- When "!" appears above the bobber, press the tool key to reel in and land the catch.
- Reel too early and the fish escapes — the attempt fails.
Fish Shadow Sizes
- Small
- Medium
- Large
- Giant
💡 Target specific sizes — e.g. Cherry Fish is Small, so ignore large shadows.
Bycatch
Fish shadows can produce non-fish items:
- Junk (wood, glass, fiber, etc.)
- Artifacts
- Treasure boxes
Fishing Rods
Rods are not gifted — buy (500g) or craft (4 ingots). Longer cast = more range.
| Rod | Cast Range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Worn Fishing Rod | Base | Beach tackle shop — 500 gold |
| Copper Fishing Rod | 8 tiles | Forge at March's shop — 4 Copper Bars |
| Iron Fishing Rod | 10 tiles | Forge at March's shop — 4 Iron Bars |
| Silver Fishing Rod | 12 tiles | Forge at March's shop — 4 Silver Bars |
| Gold Fishing Rod | 14 tiles | Forge at March's shop — 4 Gold Bars |
Fishing Methods
- 🎣 Rod Fishing: Standard fishing — see the mechanics section above for the charge → cast → wait → reel flow.
- 🐟 Schools of Fish: A rare darker patch of water containing multiple small shadows. Cast in to chain-catch several fish until the school is exhausted.
- 🤿 Dive-Based Fishing: Look for dark bubbling circles in the water; swim over and press the action key to dive. Diving yields items rods can't catch — seaweed, clams, freshwater oysters, etc. Seaweed is a key ingredient in advanced animal feed.
- 🪱 Fish Bait: Added in v0.15.0. Common and Rare Fish Bait unlock exclusive fish — e.g. Copper Rockfish only takes Common Bait, Golden Eel only takes Rare Bait. Since v0.15.2 bait also works inside the Mines. The Fish Trap was added in the same patch; legendary fish never enter traps (since v0.15.2).

Fish Uses
| Use | Details |
|---|---|
| Selling | Price scales with rarity — common fish 20–100t, legendary ~500t. |
| Cooking | Many fish dishes (Breaded Catfish, Sushi Platter, Seafood Boil, etc.). Reina, Caldarus and others love fish dishes. |
| Museum | Donate to the Fish Wing to complete Fish Sets — a major share of overall museum completion. |
| Gifting | Most characters Universal-Dislike raw fish; cooked fish dishes are good gifts (Reina, Eiland, Hayden, etc.). |
| Bulletin Board Quests | Townsfolk regularly post requests for specific fish. |
| Fish Bait / Fish Trap | Connected mechanics added in v0.15.0 — bait catches exclusive fish, traps passively collect normal fish. |
Tips & Tricks
- Late-night low-energy fishing: you can cast with even 1 energy remaining (casting itself is free; only a successful catch costs energy). A classic end-of-day trick to convert leftover stamina into gold.
- Jumping into water scares nearby fish — don't jump close to your target (1.0 tip).
- A fish shadow biting can still yield wood, glass, or a treasure box — this is by design, not a bug (wiki Trivia).
- Don't forget to dive — seaweed, clams, and similar only come from diving, and they're ingredients for advanced feed and dishes.
- Fish Bait catches exclusive species — required for full museum completion (e.g. Copper Rockfish needs Common Bait, Golden Eel needs Rare Bait).
- Legendary fish prompt: when "A legendary fish is nearby..." appears, head to the matching water body right away — the weather window may last only one day.
